CHAPTER 2 WINDS, STORMS AND CYCLONES
Increased wind speed means that the air pressure is reduced as wind moves from a region of high air pressure to low air pressure. The speed of the wind depends on the difference in the air pressure.
REASONS FOR GENERATION OF WIND CURRENTS
1. Uneven heating between the equator and the poles
2. Uneven heating of land and water
THUNDERSTROMS AND CYCLONES
When rising temperatures produce strong winds, the water droplets are carried upwards. The droplets freeze and fall down again. This creates lightning and sound which is called a thunderstorm.
When water vapour changes to liquid, heat is released and air is warmed up. This air rises up causing a pressure drop, which makes more air rush to the centre of the storm. This leads to a low pressure system with high speed winds revolving around it. This is called a cyclone.
Tornado is a dark funnel shaped cloud that reached from the sky to the ground and can cause intensive damage.
